Can stream .mkv from android phone to tv but not from windows media pl

Having an issue getting my LG smart tv to see the .mkv files in "my videos" (.mp4 shows up and plays just fine).

The tv (LB5830) has no issues recognizing those same files when I connect it to my Samsung Note 3.

I've downloaded the codec pack that appears most commonly when I Google ".mkv playback on windows media player", it didn't solve the issue.

I should also mention that the .mkv files do not appear in windows media player either, I'm certain that if I can get WMP to recognize the .mkv files in my library, the tv will find them. The issue has to be on the PC's end of the wireless connection.

I'm not trying to connect the phone to the pc, I'm trying to get Windows Media Player to play .mkv files stored on my pc... then I can watch them on my tv just like I watch .mp4 files now.

How? I checked the link you gave, the phones connection to the pc isn't the issue, forget the phone entirely. I've downloaded video files to my pc, mp4 and mkv, only the mp4 show up in windows media player. It won't recognize the mkv.

Use VLC media player to change the format and it should work

It may be an issue with the mkv file. Try formatting it with this link. Make sure to uncheck the additional offers. I use wmp to stream to my roku. It plays some, but other mkv's don't work. I use the program and convert them to mp4

There's no way to make WMP play them eh? The video files stream fine from my phone to my tv, but trying to watch the same video from pc to tv is a no go. Plus WMP won't even add the mkv movies to my library. I suppose I'll look into converting, I may just end up downloading to the pc then moving them to my phone and streaming via that connection to the tv, but that's clearly an extra step and potentially, a battery drainer...
