.wav flies show up "unknown" in wmc. Fixable?

I love WMC to play music files, because I can browse by album, artist, song, etc. I've done this with .wma files but it's a lot of space. I like very high quality, so I decided to rip all my music onto an external drive to have a backup and a source to play raw files. It works fantastically in VLC but I can't browse that with my remote control, like I can with WMC. When I added the external drive as the place to find music files and deleted the internal drive's music folders as a place to search, all I got was one enormous file called "unknown." No way to search, find, make playlists.

Is there a fix to that? Why does VLC have the metadata of artist, album, album art and genre but WMC doesn't?
