WMC + XBOX + MKV woes

First off, on the off chance anyone was unable to contact their xbox like me, make sure you computer is not DMZ'ed. Technically, its not on the same network.

I'm using Sharks codec pack, and mkvs, of whatever type, play perfectly in Windows 7 RC. However, they barely work when I try to steam them to my Xbox 360 which is wired to the same router. Only MKVs have this problem, other formats play perfectly fine.

The MKV will either stutter terribly, look horrible, or not even play. I also can't pause or fast-forward because it will bug out MC, forcing me to restart it.

Has anyone gotten MKVs, and movies in general, to work well with the XBOX 360? I would like to know what you did.

You could try bridging the connection via a ethernet cord and it seems to stop the shuttering (only happens for me for about 5 seconds when the film first starts).

Multimedia streaming may be an option to allow in your router's setup...

Not all routers support all forms of multimedia streaming...

Many router manufacturers have released patches for specific usage, IE, Xbox.

Is your AV interferring?

Many routers have firmware updates available that will greatly increase throughput of high bitrate media files. It is critical to fully understand that folllowing all instructions given by the device maker (in this case your router) exactly for a firmware update is critical.

Of course, newer routers have better support for newer technologies.

If you are using an ISP provided combo gateway/router/modem, I suggest a router for your LAN or at least a switch in between your streaming devices and not just a gateway device.

Well I only have this problem with most MKVs, so I think it more and issue with the way media center on the xbox handles the files. I can play my other HD movies without a hitch, and it looks great, sorry I forgot to mention that. I'm pretty sure its a codec isssue, I was wondering if anyone got a optimal setup for all kinds types of movies.

It also doesn't seem to matter whats in the MKV, only that its an MKV container.

Hi tomato, have you tried the divx software? Im streaming "most" MKV files to the xbox using this - divx7 integrates with wmp12 to enable this feature. Im still struggling with some mkv files but i think its more to do with the way they were encoded than the actual playback software.
