Both WMP and Media Centre no longer working

I posted this in the Music, Pictures & Video forum, but no reply there so thought I'd try here.

Both WMP and Media Centre no longer working
    Hey guys

My PC woes started a few weeks ago - I had RAM issues which I have since solved. However, during the course of trying to diagnose the memory problem, I installed and uninstalled a myriad of programs.

And now my Media Player won't play, while Media Centre crashes if I go to the Music or Video sections (Live TV seems to be fine though). If I start WMP from the taskbar shortcut, the window flashes up briefly before disappearing. If I try to start it by double clicking an audio file, I get the "Server Execution Error" message.

I've tried disabling all media features in the Windows Features section, and then re-enabling. This did not work.

Note that iTunes works perfectly, playing the same mp3s that are crashing WMP.

I'd really rather not have to reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate edition just for this one problem...

Thanks for your help. I've googled it, but can't find a download link to Windows6.1-KB974817-x86.msu. I did find this though - a large rar file containing a stack of different updates, including that file:

Windows 7 Updates-Pack 25.09.2009 | x8 6& x64 » Full And Free Download rapidshare megaupload direct link depositfile filefactory HotFile Storage VIP-file and Torrent.

There are a lot of updates there though, so didn't think I should install them all?

If this was an official update, shouldn't it be available via the Microsoft site or Windows update?

It's official but not meant for public. I've been running it and all the patches for months very well.

You can install the others if you want. It's good to do.

Since they are .msu, they can not have been tampered with. It's safe.

I'd have a quick look at that .bat file though to ensure it only references the .msu files and nothing else.

Tried running sfc /scannow? Should fix up any corrupt files if any are stopping from WMP & WMC from working.

I ran sfc /scannow from the cmd prompt, and after a short test got the reply "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".

I'm still unable to find a place to download Windows6.1-KB974817-x86.msu from that isn't also pushing out cracked versions of Windows and other dodgy files...

Hey TorrentG - thank you so much for hosting the file, very, very kind of you!

I downloaded it, extracted to desktop and ran it - but was greeted by this error:

"This update is not applicable to your computer".

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit edition.

What do you mean Uber Philf? Should I be looking for the same file, but an x64 version?
