    Ripping/"Backing up" DVDs

    Folks,

I am new to HTPCs and Windows 7. Please forgive me my sins...

    Here is my HTPC specs:

    Case: nMedia HTPC2000B
    CPU: Intel E8300 Core 2 Duo 2.93GHz
    Mobo: Intel DP45SG
    RAM: DDR3 6GB total
HDDs: Seagate 1.5TB (2 Drives for now)
    TV Card: Hauppauge HVR2250
    Optic: LG 1st Gen BD/HD-DVD-ROM

Issue: I know how to rip a cd onto my hard drive, but MC will NOT allow me to do the same for DVDs. Do I need special software? Inquiring minds want to know...

Are you trying to rip a video dvd to make a legal backup of a movie you own. If so then yes you need software for that to bypass security on the disk

dvd shrink is a good and free pice of software you can use to do it

Welcome to SF, to answer your question yes you need a dvd ripping software, there's a few out there and people have their preferences, I would try DVDFab it's free for 30 days so if you don't like it , you don't buy it. You can find it here Download DVD Copying Software for free | Convert DVD to PSP
    Hope that helps you out.:)

Yes for backing up your dvd's you can try either suggestion above, as for coverart and movie info you can try Yammm or Media Browser they both have sticky threads at the top of media center forum.

Yes.. you are going to need special tools for ripping. Some free some not. I have a link that has a forum that you will have the answers to all of your questions on ripping anything ...be it audio to movie and they link to tools in the download section. They have very instructive tutorials as well.
Doom9.net - The Definitive DVD Backup Resource

As for your cover art...Cdcovers.cc / World's Largest CD Covers and DVD Covers Album Art Archive

These people are very knowledgeable in the field of ripping as well.
    AfterDawn.com

Enjoy your new experience in the world of ripping software. And if you need anymore help send me a pm.

P.S. my personal preference for an all in one tool is http://www.dvdfab.com/
I use the platinum version. Also you can shrink with it as well. say a dual layer you can shrink to a 4.7gb disc...if your going to try and convert files then you will need conversion tools as well for going from say .avi to dvd format and such.

As already stated, there are many types of software that can help accomplish your goal.
On top of whats already been mentioned, AnyDVD is also good (and my personal choice) , although you must purchase this one.
As far as free ones, DVDDecrypter was at one time a good choice and free, but Im unsure where it stands these days. Been a long time

I too would also suggest researching at Doom9.org.

Tons of info there to help you choose the right software for your needs, as well as many tutorials on ripping and encoding.

You can easily rip the DVD and keep the file structure entact, for a lossless copy,
or re-code to a file as well.

I personally prefer recoding to file using a MKV or MP4 container with x264 codec. (MeGUI) but its learning curve can be steep, especially if you know little about Ripping and encoding.
Auto GK will create AVI's (& i think MP4s) as well, with a good quality output and far less learning curve.

If you know little about encoding, It will however take some research, patience, and trial and error at first. And the learning curve can be frustrating, depending on the method & software you choose.

In the end, its your choice.

Just be patient, and perhaps we can help guide you in the right direction if you get stuck.

Most of the ripping software that you may find on doom9 require that you install tons of additional components and filters, so unless you really want to get deep into encoding and decide to learn to set up your rips "perfectly" I suggest you start with something easier... Like Handbrake, which is my personal choice for encoding. Let me just say that I have been into encoding for quite some time now, and in the end, all the things and settings that are most important when ripping DVDs can be found in Handbrake.

I've also been using DVDFab Platinum for a few years now. It's a great "all-in-one" dvd copying and converting program that's easy to use. It's not free, but IMO it's worth the small price as it rips, converts, shrinks and burns.
Alternatively, you could use DVDFab HD Decrypter, which is free, but will only copy to your hard drive and remove encryption. To burn to a standard single layer dvd, you then need to "shrink" the dvd files first. You can do this with DVD Shrink 3.2. DVD Shrink hasn't been updated for years, and no longer supports many of the encryption methods used today, which is why you need the two step process with both programs.
If you want to transcode the ripped DVD files (fom DVDFab HD) to a smaller .avi or .mp4 file etc. then use Handbrake after the first step.
