I am using WMC and the volume is really really low when playing .avi
when I play .mkv I can crank the volume using ffshow (I use shark007)

i have the same problem. sound card is a creative x-fi if that matters...
Doing this may help, change to DVD 48000, this helps sometimes.
you are a life saver. thank you so much!! i never would have thought of that.
I'm going try that too. I have the same issue. Usually I just crank up the TV volume, but if I forget and go back to live TV it scares me to death.
Yea change the quality and, I feel stupid I didn't notice this, but there are a ton of settings for sound in the control panel. Go to the enhancements page and check "loudness equalization" or something like that. That makes all the programs on the pc the same volume. I'm used to xp where is you needed a 3rd party software for decent sound settings ha.
Even with 3rd patry software on XP (pre-sp3) you are restricted to CD audio quality due to a hard-coded limitation when XP was developed and the fact there was no high-quality (above CD quality) sound cards and it was believed there never would be, A patch was released after SP2 and included with SP3 that removed this restriction however.
i had media center edition and if you updated from sp2 to sp3 it caused a whole ton of problems with media center and the power pack so i never updated. im much happier with 7 now anyway. its also my first 64bit os and im happy i can actually use the ram i have in there now
It did work for me. I had it at "Studio" since I thought it would sound better.
i was having problems with the whole Windows 7 volume being too low....
this is the one i used that worked...
