HD movie playback mainly avi files is choppy in WMC

Ive searched this forum in and out and couldn't find the exact problem im having.

i have movies that are primarily in .avi format and they play fine in VLC Media Player with a steady frame rate of 24fps (fraps) In WMP and Media Center, however, the playback is choppy and the frame rate will jump everywhere between 55 and 60fps (my refresh rate is 60).

I have had every codec pack installed (at separate times) and that doesnt change anything. without a codec pack they still play fine in VLC. Media center and WMP will play them fine only needing the AC3 Filter installed w/ no additional codecs.

All these videos played fine in WMP and Media Center in XP (previous version of windows i had) so its not the hardware thats an issue..i think.

    Im running Win7 Pro 64bit

    HARDWARE:
    Asus M2N-E
    GTX285
    750GB Seagate
    Creative X-Fi 7.1
    6GB ocz fatality ram

Was this install an upgrade or clean install?

Install Shak007 codec releases. both 32bit and 64bit.

    Suggested changes from default . . .
    Open the 32bit settings app
Help TAB, choose to associate filetypes to WMP
H264 TAB, choose the Divx codec

settings Just for you, in the x64 settings app (for Media Center)
go to the SWAP TAB, choose to disable the Microsoft Video codec, and the DMO codecs.
If you would prefer FFDshow to handle MP3 audio (alot of AVI's use this) make that selection also

If you want the same behavior from 32bit players, make the above changes in the 32bit app too.

you may not need to disable it. I was just covering all the possibilities.
If it turns out that you do need it disabled re-enabling it is only 1 click away.

well i tried it both ways, with them disabled and without. when they are disabled avi files run fine and it icons for the codecs show up in the taskbar but tv doesnt work. with it disabled it will run fine for about an hour but then the icons go away and its like the microsoft codecs kick back in and override the shark007 package. is there a way i can keep the msoft codecs enabled but keep the other ones from "dying out" in an hour into the video..?

Have you tried Media Player Classic - Home Cinema? Choose either the x86 or x64 version.

yes ive tried home cinema and vlc player. both work perfect (even before the shark007 codecs) but i use this on a tv with a remote etc so i want to get it running smooth in WMC.

Is your CPU overclocked? If it is underclock it back to stock. Then, I'd download 2 diagnostics - a hard drive one such as Seagate Seatools and run a quick 5min check, then Memtest 86. Run that for a pass. If the diagnostics pass and the cpu is stock we'll see what's next. Also, try the guide in my sig and update your chipset and other drivers including firmware for your burner and monitor.
