WMP 12 - file problem

So, I recently did a clean install of 7048 to replace 7057. All of my mp3 and movie files are stored on a different partition than Windows 7. When I got all of my programs back installed, I attempted to update my library in Windows Media Player. I had to take ownership of the D:\mp3 folder first. Now, WMP cannot play any of the files, it will only add them to the library under Unknown. When I view the files in Explorer, none of the tag information is available either.

Does anyone know of the solution to this problem?

Sounds like your library needs to be recreated and your tag format updated. First get Mp3tag - Download and verify that all your mp3s have ONLY ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1 tags. If you're using ID3v2.4 or ID3v1 tags not all tag data will be saved to the files and your library will not be portable. I cool side effect of using ID3v2.3 tags it that WMP12 will save your album art to each file. Wastes a bit of space bit it's worth it!

Next start WMP12 click the title bar and press ALT,T,A,R in sequence. That will reset your library and should allow your songs to reload.

I checked out Mp3tag, and all my ID3 tags are in the correct format, and show perfectly under that program. Under explorer, they still are not showing up, as well as in WMP 12. WMP also cannot play any of the files. I believe there is some file permission error.

Another odd thing, is that I cannot share the folder, whereas before I could.

Upon closer inspection, only the D:\mp3 was given full perms to myself. The individual files and folders within. How do I recursively apply the settings to the entire folder?

There's a hard way and an easy way. That hard way is to dig down into the advanced options on the security tab of your mp3 folder, take ownership and set permissions recursively. The easy way is to use a tutorial that one of our other users has posted: Take Ownership Shortcut

I don't know what the shortcut for take ownership you posted is, but I suspect that it is the registry hack that adds the option to the context menu. That's how I took ownership initially.

I just went back in to the folder security menu, went under advanced, and I guess I had forgotten to check the inherit boxes before I applies changes before. I checked them this time, and all is well again.

Thanks much for the help! rep given
