Windows 7: resolution

resolution

On my family's computer I set up windows vista media center with their 50in LCD tv. When I initially did this with the settop box it worked wonderfully and the resolution was standard resolution, as it should have been. Then they ordered an HD tv package from their cable provider which required getting a new settop box that supported HD resolutions. That settop box works fine with the tv and I have it setup to work with the media center as well. Everything still works, but now the resolution is even worse than it was when they only received standard definition cable. It doesn't matter what channel or resolution the settop box is receiving it just sucks on the computer. But if it goes straight through to the tv it's beautiful. I thought it could be the cable so I switched them all around and it made no difference, tv still beautiful, computer still ugly. Thought it could be the splitter, so I eliminated it and connected straight to the computer, still the same crappy resolution. I'm at a loss as to why this new settop box made any difference, especially to make it worse.

Anyone have any ideas?

I should note the computer this is on is a Dell Diminsion and I put an ATI all-in-wonder video card/tv tuner in it to make this setup work. The monitor is hooked up through dvi and the tv through hdmi, it doesn't matter if I watch tv on the monitor or tv, it looks terrible on either one.
