WMP and .avi files!!!!! PLSSS Help!!!

I love Windows 7 and WMP 12. But, when I download .avi files ( movies 700 mb or better). WMP 12 doesn't display them in the video library. And this in turn. Won't let me display them through my Xbox 360. I've gotten it to work with some movies but, not all. My computer and the Xbox 360 are connected via a wired network in my home. All of my .mp3's and pics show up without a hitch. Just can't figure this out for my .avi files. Hopefully someone can help me with this. As it's driving me nuts.

Thank You!!

By the way. I am using build 7057. If this is any concelation.

You need to download the Windows 7 Codec Pack from Shark007.net - Windows 7 Codecs. Dont forget the 64-bit components too if you have 64-bit version of windows.

I agree with swarfega, it sounds like you need the latest codec pack. You could also try K-Lite Mega Codec pack as that's what i'm currently using & it even allows for viewing of .MKV & .DIVX movies in WMC/WMP12....

You only need one codec pack at a time.

FWIW - SHark007's also allow native .MKV playback in WiMP and WMC....

I'm completely against codec packs of any kind as I've seen them at the root cause of many and varied insidious PC issues. I'm for them even less in 7 as it plays most of what's out there by default. Many of the formats you get movies in from "out there" are just plain bad formats and really deserve to be converted to something a little more conventional if you're planning to keep them around. I convert all questionable material to h.264/aac To that end I've not found a better, faster, more flexible utility than Avidemux.org It uses all four cores and often fixes various image and sync images as it converts. Conversion quality loss? Sure, some but I'd much rather be able to play something back in a standard format with a consistent experience and sacrifice a little quality -- after all, odds are there's another higher quality version of the movie you just got that could stand the q-loss if you really want to keep the movie.

Get 7068 and upgrade. First uninstall any codec paks. See if you still have a problem after the upgrade (7068 has some great fixes for WMP and WMC). If you are still missing codecs, do the SHark007 install.
