Network media library scan really slow

I've just set up a new HTPC with an Athlon dual core processor and gigabit ethernet. I'm finding that scanning media libraries takes an eternity - 3+ hours to scan a photo library of approx 6,000 images.
The music library was much worse - 24 hours and counting to scan 74,000 mp3 tracks.

Is there any way of speeding up the scanning of libraries on network shares?

So you're saying that Windows 7 isn't gonna be a great experience for people with alot of music on a dual core machine over a gigabit ethernet link? That's bad news for alot of home theatre PC owners who have this configuration as their preferred base hardware (top-end quad core processors make alot of noise and consume alot of energy, which is why they're not a good choice for machines which be living under your TV, in front of your wife!).

Surely 6,000 images isn't considered a massive amount of data in this day and age? 3 hours to scan these into a library? MediaPortal zips through this stuff in a fraction of the time (on the same hardware).
