How to: Play video files from USB memory or DVD?

I am trying to use Windows 7 Professional Media Center as a stand-alone media player.

I have been trying to, but havent found how to, play video files from USB memory and DVD.

I often bring home video files on a DVD (saved as data files, not as DVD) and a USB memory. But I havent figured out how to play them in Windows 7 Media Center. For example, the movie library setup doesnt allow me to add these drives for the library at all! (they dont appear at all in the drive/folder list)!

Is it possible to EASILLY play video files saved on USB stick or DVD-R disc with standalone Media Center system?
