    WMP plays, WMC doesn't

    Hey,

    This is driving me nuts.

I have some folders with a huge amount of series, and one particular chapter can't be played by Windows Media Center. It starts playing as expected, but after 1:35mins I have a "Windows Media Center cannot open the file." message on WMC. This stop happens always at the very same point, so my belief was this file was corrupted. Am I right?

Actually, no, I'm wrong. Because the very same file can be played without any issues on Windows Media Player, on VLC, on DiVX player.

There is no record of errors on Event Viewer, nor I have any error dialog other than a plain "Cannot open the file" message on WMC.

I found somewhere an advice to clean up Media Center cache (%localappdata%\Microsoft\Media Player\) folder and try again. Nothing changed.

    What else may I do?

What type of video is it?

Try playing the file with WMP x64 since that is the most closely related to WMC since you are on W7 x64. The default WMP that is used is the 32-bit version. To use the x64 either change the default or manually open it using %ProgramFiles%\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe.

If WMP x64 has the same issue then it is most likely a decoder\codec issue that we can troubleshoot.

    Hey.

It is a standard MPEG-4 (XViD) file ("Mythbusters S07E11 - Car vs Rain"). I forgot to mention before, but 64-bit WMP was already set as default. And both 32 and 64-bit WMP plays the file just fine. Only WMC doesn't.

I'm still open for more suggestions.

    Thanks.
