I could try contacting them for a third time and asking to see what they say this time.

If it's Home and Student, it's licensed for 3 PCs for Non-Commercial Use. Which 3 PCs you use are irrelevant. But only 3 PCs can have it installed at one time. All other versions of Office, you're down to two installs, one for home use and one for mobile use but then again, "Mobile Use" is very broad so the bottom line is two installs.

Here is a copy from the chat session with a Microsoft rep.

Please wait for an agent to respond. You are currently '1' in the queue.

Please note that this chat service is available to guide you to the appropriate resources for your questions. Often this can include technical support options or a phone number to the appropriate Microsoft Team.

You are now chatting with 'Trent'.
Trent: Welcome to Microsoft Customer Service Chat, Petey. Please give me a moment while I review your question.
    Petey: Hello Trent.
    Trent: Hello Petey.
Trent: I understand that you would like to clarify on many computers can Office 2010 Professional Academic can be installed.
    Petey: Yes please
Trent: Thank you for the confirmation.
Trent: You are correct, Office Professional Academic 2010 can only be installed on two computers.
Petey: I thought so, but it seems weird that the person claims that the box says three. I'm thinking he might be confused over what version he has or he might have gotten an illegal copy from ebay and does not want to admit it.
Petey: I'll pass the information along to him. Thank you for your time.
    Trent: You are welcome.
Trent: Do you need my help with any other customer service related concerns, Petey?
Petey: Not at the moment. Thank you again.
Trent: You are welcome. Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service Chat. Please feel free to contact us again. We are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Chat session has been terminated by the agent.

I think I figured out the source of the confusion! Does you box cover look like this, but in English?

If so, the remark about being for 3 pcs, refers to the Home and Student edition. You will notice that there is a star next to the word "Student", just like their is a star next to the statement.

That's a common mistake I hear. Since it's for Home and Students, many I know will call it the Academic edition even though there is an actual edition out there known as the Professional Academic Edition.

But good to pick up on that licensing bit. I was not aware of a Professional Academic Edition until now.
