Any friends that have Office 2003 or 2007 with Outlook included?
then download just the Outlook program.
I did that with Power Point and Access a few years ago until I got Office 2007.

Completely free solution

For Notes and Contacts, calendar and Tasks, use Essential PIM - it's light and free. In the free version it also lets you configure 1 e-mail.
For more e-mail accounts I would go to Windows Live Mail (from Windows Live Essentials beta).

I had the same situation like you when Office 2007 came out, I also had Home & Student.

i found a good one its Mozilla Sunbird, it is pretty much the same thing as outlook except there is no email for it but there is another app from Mozilla that has email and both of them are completely free.

Windows Live Mail is pretty good (both its current and the beta iteration. Thunderbird is okay.
