Newb question: Office 2007 worries > Office 2003

I've been using office 2003 for a long time and recently just added Outlook 2007 & Groove 2007, given with those I did not have to worry about the file extension change.

My question is; for all Office 2007 programs (Word, Excel & Powerpoint) can I have them default to the 2003 file extension instead of the Office Open XML (ex. "docx." etc.).

(via Google) I've learned Word 2007 can do this & I know of the compatability plugins but I want to know If I can edit my settings in office 2007 to send documents without the fear of someone's 2003 office suite not being able to fully interact with my files from all 3 major document editors?
