When typing or holding delete you can notice a lag.
However it is not present on the last line of the first page.
It seems to get worse as the document goes.
It is a *.docx
There is about 10 words plus 10 shapes with text in them on each page.
Why Why Why

Could be lots of reasons as to why it's lagging. What are your computer specs? And are you running anything else while you are running Office? Give us some more information :)

I have tried with no other apps running and it does it.

It seems to be something to do with the document

Interesting specs (based on that it should run without any issue or lags) how big is your document? Sometimes if you have a large document Word can sometimes lag , especially if you have lots of images in the document. What kind of document is it your working on?

I also think that Word is writing up a back up copy to your hard drive too, could also explain why it's lagging a bit.

edit

it turns out, i can open a 2010 document just fine :p.. my word was not lagging nor did i notice anything different.. maybe it is your copy of word that might be problematic.. have you tried making the said document on another pc?

Questions: Why are you running a 32 bit OS with a 64 Bit system? If you were running a 64 Win 7 then you could be running the 64 bit Microsoft Office 2010, and not having this problem. I have basically the same system on my Windows Machine, and I work with huge files (up to a 1,000 pages (editor)) with little to no slow down whatsoever (enjoy the 64 bit office).

how'd you know it was installed as 64bit? i did not or rather do not know how to check :D.. if it was indeed installed as 64bit, i believe you could install it again as 32bit and still use the same key.. im not sure about that though.. i've never installed a 64bit program into my 32bit system.. i thought it would not install so i never bothered trying.. :p

If you purchased both Win 7 and Office 2010 in a box set they come with both the 64 bit and 32 bit disc. By doing that the same Key Code will work with either one, albeit you can only install either the 64 or 32 but not both on separate machines (Win 7). Usually the Office suite can be put on up to three machines within the same household (you should double check that, however, I think it is correct).

If you downloaded from Technet or MSDN then you still will have the ability to install either 64 or 32 with both Office and Win 7.

Not sure how the OEM's work.

I am on Windows 32 bit and therefore have no choice but to be on the 32 bit version of office 2010.

The document ain't even very big

I can't really try on another PC as all the other PC's that I have access to are still on 2007

but i believe i've opened your document and mine still is 2007. i was surprised that my 2007 can open a 2010 document without errors. i was expecting the same error i get when i open a 2007 document on a 2003 office. maybe i could open it but not see some parts of the document. i dont know. if you really need to have the document finished, do it again in a different pc. if you still have time, try to reinstall office. i believe you can reinstall office as many times as you want provided it is on the same pc. (not sure about the last sentence though) :p

2007 & 2010 both use the *.docx
2003 only supported *.doc
I don't think 2007 displays 2010 documents properly though
I don't think it supports text effects
I have finished the document anyways but just wanted to know why this lagging was occurring.

if you make another document, will the lag occur? if so, maybe your office is the problem. reinstall it and it will be as good as new ( i think :p). if not, maybe somewhere along the way your document got corrupted hence it will produce an anomaly an example of which is the lag..

Opened the doc on my laptop, which is about 5 years old, and I'm experiencing a lag that gets worse the farther down you go. Can't compare at my desktop, unfortunately, which is a fairly new machine, and which is many miles away from me now.

Is every page is filled with SmartArt? Even though they're just simple shapes, could a whole bunch of them be taxing the GPU and/or CPU? What if you replaced all of those shapes with Draw Text Box, which is an option beside the shape boxes in Drawing Tools? Or are they already plain text boxes? Can't tell, sorry.

That said, the doc is tiny. Have you tried using a template? Indeed, maybe reinstall and see what happens.

When I am holding down keys in this document it take my cpu usage to 25%
Normally it would be 10% max

Here's what I tried:

1.) Opened your doc on my desktop (pretty new computer) and there is no lag. Like I said, with my laptop (5 years old) there was a very noticeable lag. However, I opened one of my docs on my laptop that's 77,306 words long and there is no lag. Just for kicks I copied and pasted it up to 17,316,542 words (22,959 pages) - still had no lag.

2.) Copied only the first four shapes from the first page on your doc. I pasted them in row after row in a new doc on my laptop, until I had 2 pages. The lag showed up big time on both pages.

3.) Made my own doc with 10 pages of shapes all over it plus some text. No lag.

Might be a settings/properties thing with your doc, or I didn't replicate your doc properly on my test doc.
