Instant Search will not open any Outlook items

I have Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit and Microsoft Office Professional 2007.

When I go to Start then search and it displays Outlook items in the results, when I try to open any Outlook items (emails, appointments, attachments), nothing happens -- the item I request to open will not open.

I also tried right clicking on the Outlook item and then selecting the "Open" option and still nothing.

I also tried right clicking on the item and then selecting "Show Conversation" which does open the window with all items in that bconversation ut I can't open from there either.

Other non-Outlook items found in the instant search (such as Word and Excel documents stored on my hard drive) open just fine.

I cannot drag an Outlook item from the instant search results to my desktop and save it there -- I receive the following error: "An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file...Error 0x80040119: No error description available". I can drag the same items directly from Outlook to my desktop and save them without any problem.

Outlook is my default email program and file associations are properly set to open Outlook files (e.g., messages, appointment files, etc.) using Outlook.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me. I'd like to avoid uninstalling Office 2007, scrubbing/cleaning the registry and reinstalling it if at all possible. I'd also like to avoid reinstalling the operating system. But I understand those might be the only options I'm left with.

I have created a brand new PST file, populated it with emails, the emails are indexed, I do an instant search, that content shows up in the search and I still can't open them from the Instant Search. I do not think I have a corrupted PST file that needs repaired. I don't see the connection between the problem I am having and that particular solution you've suggested.

Maybe a few ideas here:
Outlook 2010 search not returning results as expected

For the benefit of others, please post back if you find a resolution.

I took a couple of steps and now this is working. Unfortunately I'm not sure which of these steps fixed this for me. But here's what I did.
  1. I created a new PST file.
  2. Added a few emails to the PST.
  3. Waited until the PST appeared to get indexed (Tools -> Instant Search -> Indexing Status)
  4. I turned off indexing for this new PST (Search Options -> uncheck the name of the new PST)
  5. I ran scanpst.exe (c:\program files\Microsoft Office\Office12\) on just the one PST.
  6. I turned indexing back on for the new PST.
  7. I did an instant search to include emails that were both in the new PST and in other PST's which I did not run the scanpst.exe on.
  8. All Outlook items showing up in the instant search (which were both in the new PST and in other PST's) can now be opened from the search results window.
It's all very strange and doesn't make sense that this is the fix. Not sure what the magic was exactly in those steps. But it's working now and I am now satisfied. If anyone else out there is having this problem, and you go through some number of the steps above, I'd be interested to hear what does or doesn't work for you.

Whichever step resolved the issue for you, no probs, at least others know to try the steps and hopefully find a solution.

Opening An Email From Search Window

I have Windows 7 and Windows Outlook and my e-mail links in my search Window were working fine and then, one day, all the tabs and the ribbon that allows me to open the e-mail to reply, etc. was gone. I tried to re-check the view option to allow the ribbon to display but received a message that the file was gone. I am assuming, after hours of researching the internet for answers to resolve my inability to open and act on the e-mail, I discovered by accident that there is an alternate way to open and respond to e-mails that are opened from the Quick Search window.

1. Conduct a search to find an e-mail message;
2. Open the message;
3. Right click where the ribbon would be;
4. Click Customize Quick Access Toolbar;
5. Follow the directions to add preferred commands to the Quick Access Toolbar;
6. When you are done, click OK.
7. When you return to the e-mail, the quick access toolbar wil show your preferred commands.
8. Click on the command you seek; the e-mail will re-open in the same window with the full ribbon and you can work with the e-mail as if you had opened it from Outlook.

I was extremely frustrated until I discovered this trick and I am now relieved that I found a solution so I thought I would share this trick with others who may be having the problem.

Good luck.
