    Can't update Office 2010

I have a notification of a new update, but it won't install. It's update KB2494150. I keep getting the error code 80078006E. I've tried to click on "remove program" and choose "repair," but that option isn't available. It just starts to remove it. I've run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, which says it's repairing things, but the update still won't install.

I tried to do a manual install, but then I get the message "An error occurred while running detection." I also tried to do a clean boot and install it; no luck.

Anybody have any ideas about what to do next?

    Thanks!

    Maybe something here will help:
    Can't install Office updates KB2494150 & KB2493983 - Microsoft Answers
    .
    .

    In no particular order:

Tip: Insert your Office 2010 CD into the appropriate drive bay before the next installation attempt.
Tip: Access either of the following KB articles via IE (32-bit) only, run the Fix It & reboot before the next installation attempt:
Error code "0x80070646," "646," or "1606" running Windows Update
You receive an "Error 1606" error message when you try to install or remove a Microsoft program [ignore title, error number, etc.]

Tip: If no joy, see if you can download the "fullfile" version of the update(s) via Microsoft Download Center or Microsoft Update Catalog and then install it/them manually.

Tip: If still no joy & you're running Win7 or Vista, temporarily disable (turn off) User Account Control (UAC) before the next installation attempt.

I've tried all those steps, all to no avail.

Maybe it has partially installed on one of the previous attempts. Have you checked to see if it appears in the 'installed updates' list?

Start > All Programs > Windows Update > View Update History (from the menu on the left-hand side).
Search through the list for the exact KB number - if it appears, go to 'see Installed Updates' (link towards the top of the Update History screen).
Find the KB again > right-click it and touch 'Uninstall'.

    Next try the installation again.

All the attempts listed in the history have failed.

Now the update notice isn't showing up, and it says my computer is up to date. So I went to the "installed updates," and there it is in the list as installed. Go figure. It must have fixed itself - or one of the things you recommended doing worked, even though it didn't seem to.

    THANKS!

I'm getting the same "an error occurred while running detection" error when trying to install SP1 on MS Office. I've been reading some posts to see if I can find an answer, but usually Office updates from MS install OK (except this one) and Office runs fine. Any ideas or possible solutions?

Have you tried all of the suggestions made earlier in this thread?
If so, it would be better to start a new thread - you would probably receive more response, because this one is marked as resolved. :)
