Hi, welcome to the forums :)

The best thing to do is to re-associate the file extentions with the correct programs. Open explorer and navigate to where the files are and use the Open With options to reassign them to Word/Word 2010.

You may need to click Bowse and manually find the word executable.

    for x86/x64 office
    program files/office14/winword.exe

for x86 office installed on x64 Windows
    program files(x86)/office14/winword.exe

       Note
You will not see the .exe but you will know the correct 1 as it's marked application

Thanks for the quick reply... I tried this and the office14 folder just has OneNote folder which is empty!!! does that mean that the MS Office has not been installed properly????

That would be the indication. I would completely uninstall office then try again and make sure that you use a custom install and select all applications to install. That way you can almost guarantee that it'll work. Any apps you would want to remove can be done easily afterwards.
