Preview Pane Issue - Can't rename file

I recently found I could not rename an MS Word file selected in Windows Explorer while the Preview Pane was "on". Apparently, Windows opens a Winword process to display the file and Windows considers the file "open". With Preview Pane "off", the Winword process quits and the file can then be renamed.

Is this a "feature" of Windows or a bug that Microsoft can / should fix?

Neither. At least with Office 2010. Renaming working just fine with preview pan.
Winword does start, but you can easily rename file, and preview pan just blinks for a second and displays the content again.

Do you have UAC turned off by any chance?
