Excel link Causing Win7 Security Login Pop-Up

We have a few Excel reports that we are accessing on a server over an HTTPS link. We have used links to these reports for the past 5 years with no issue. However, now that we have upgraded to Win 7 our users are getting a Windows Security Log-In pop-up when they click the link to the Excel Report. Once they find the Pop-Up and just close it (without entering any credentials) the report opens, however many users are unaware of this step or do not notice the pop-up and are therefore unable to proceed. Can anyone shed some light on why this log-in prompt is coming up and how I can get rid of it. Even though it requests user-id and password, simply closing it allows you to proceed so it is not serving any purpose other than to frustrate our users.

I am very thankful for any guidance on this topic,
    J

I am not certain if this would help, but certainly worth checking out:
You are prompted to enter your credentials when you access an FQDN site from a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows 7 and has no proxy configured

Please let us know if it helps. :)
