Navigation Pane is a pain

Using MS Word 2010. I have "navigation pane" unchecked in "View," but sometimes when I open Word, the navigation pane is there and "navigation pane" is re-checked. How do I permanently uncheck it and prevent its appearance? Thanks.

Un-checking the option in the View tab should do the job.

Perhaps a 'Repair' will fix it:

Yeah, I kept unchecking it, and it would continue to appear. Did a repair, and that seems to have solved the problem. Thanks.
