Question about licensing

My son has Office 2010 on his now DEAD laptop.

So my question is, can we install Office again on another PC? Will the key still work?

One problem that I envision is that the copy of office 2010 was pre-installed on your son's old laptop. If so then someplace you should have the key that was sent when it was paid for. Otherwise you might have to call microsoft in order to validate. If the office 2010 was an oem installed copy, then the license is most times just for that particular machine and you are out of luck.

The OEM office install includes most versions of office, even starter which works great as it includes word and excel. When you elect to purchase one of the versions of office 2010 you will then receive a key from microsoft that unlocks and completes the install of the version that you bought.

What was the flavor of office 2010? home/student/small business/professional??

that would make a diff, also, if you have your receipt from microsoft for the purchase, they might give you another key.

If you have the retail version of Microsoft Office 2010 just install it on your new computer.

If it fails to activate just use the telephone activation method to call Microsoft and explain you've transferred the software to a new computer.

If you have an OEM license then Microsoft will not be able to offer you any support, unless you buy a new product key for the version you want.
