Office 2003 slow with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

I have recently upgraded my OS to Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit from XP 32bit. When I was running XP, Office 2003 ran fine on it, nice and quick. Since installing Office 2003 with Win 7, I have found that documents drag on it. By this I mean, if I'm scrolling down an excel spreadsheet or word document, it will be quite slow and the text will "flicker" as I am scrolling down. Basically, I can't scroll down as quickly as I could on XP. This is particularly noticeable on larger documents.

Also, for example, if I insert a row of cells on Excel, it is slightly delayed and certainly not as quick as it was with XP.

    I have installed SP3 for Office 2003.

I have tried Office in the XP mode on Win7 and this actually seems to solve the problem but I found that the XP mode slowed down other programs that I was using on my PC so I would prefer to find a proper solution to the problem.

I also installed the 60 day free trial of Office 2010 on my PC and I still encountered the same slow issues. So I am certain this problem has something to do with Win7 and Office.

Has anyone encountered the same problem and does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

At a guess, I'd say your graphics adapter may be the culprit.

Download and install the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which should flag up any problems that may occur as a result of the upgrade.

Also, can you please post your system specs?

    Thank you seavixen.

I think you're probably right about my graphics adapter - it's a Matrox G450 MMS Quad Graphics 128MB card. I run 4 monitors for daytrading. It's quite a few years old - at a guess I'd say 10yrs although I bought it second hand. Matrox don't supply a driver for Windows 7 for this card although they do have drivers for XP and Vista which work fine on Win 7.

    My system specs are:

    Dell Studio 450
    Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 2.33GHz
    6GB RAM
    Win 7 Ultimate 64bit

I have actually found a solution since my first post - I went to Control Panel - System and Settings - System - Advanced System Settings - Advanced - Performance Settings - Visual Effects and then I chose "Adjust for best performance". This seems to disable the Aero feature and puts a classic grey theme on the windows. Excel and Word are a lot quicker now. Bit of a shame as I like the look of Windows 7 Aero but performance is more important for me.

I guess the only solution is to buy a more recent quad graphics card that can cope with Windows 7 Aero?

Run the Windows 7 Uograde Advisor, which should flag up any incompatibility issues.

Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

Disabling Aero was probably best for your current situation, but I think a better graphics card should solve your problem.

A new thread in the Graphics forum should result in best advice as to what to buy.

Just a thought, though. When you installed your graphics driver, did you use Windows Vista Compatibility mode?
