    MS OFfice 2007 Product Key Usage


    I'm looking at a friend's laptop. The HD has many bad sectors and I'll be replacing it. Given the errors on the drive, I'm unable to image or clone it to the new drive as imaging will not complete.

    The laptop was given to this person. It has Office Enterprise 2007 installed. They don't have the install CDs. I am able to extract the product key with magic jellybean, but my copy of Office is home and student.

    Will I be able to install from my Office home and student 2007 CD and use their Office Enterprise product key? I know that there are different programs with Enterprise, but I think all they care about is Word and PowerPoint.

    Probably not. The product number won't match. This is one of the first things "Genuine Microsoft" checks.

    The bad sectors should have been re-written. You might try a better recovery program like ZAR.

    Download critical data recovery software - computer data recovery with ZAR.
    I haven't tried that one. I'll check it out. Truth is that this drive was old (40GB) and had so many bad sectors (99) that it was worth changing. Not to mention the fact that it runs XP and probably never had a reinstall. Add that to the numerous viruses and I decided a new drive was prudent. Thanks for the link and the info! :)

    After looking at it, ZAR doesn't appear to rewrite (segregate) bad sectors. It does, however, seem to be good at persistant recovery. Fortunately, I was able to recover all of the data my friend didn't want to lose via Paragon's Rescue kit.
