Outlook 2010 won't start, end process fixes it

Sometimes when I click on my Outlook 2010 button, it opens right away. Other times, the little wheel goes around and nothing happens. I have found that if I open Task Manager and end the Outlook processes there, I get two windows: "Another Outlook version is open, close it and try again" and "Google Sync unable to sync..." Then when I click on Outlook, it opens fine.

I do use Google Sync and get that error message at other times, but ignore it because the sync seems to work.

I checked Task Manager after closing Outlook and there are no processes running.

What's the scoop?
