Odd MS Word spell-checking (red squiggly) behavior

I have seen the following odd behavior in MS Word more than a few times and was wondering if anyone else has a) observed the same behavior and b) (more importantly) knows how to address it.

With text that was originally pasted from another document (I think this is true in most, if not all cases when the behavior is observed), if I delete the first letter of a word then retype is as a capital letter, I get a red squiggly under the word - except the first, capitalized letter. If I cut/paste the word, the problem remains. If I delete and retype the word, the problem is resolved.

Any ideas?

Right click highlighted word - menu Language and make sure that the first letter is the same language as the other part of the word.

You can also try Paste text only option, because Word normally pastes text with previous formatting (see picture attached)
.

But you can avoid the deleting first letter by using Change letter case function of MS Word.

Change letter case. Highlight the whole word and clicking SHIFT+F3. It will make first letter capital, second shift+f3 will make whole word capital and third shift+f3 will make it low case. Depending on initial case it will cycle through these three cases.

Neutron16,

The same behavior just occurred. This time, I selected the entire word and checked that the proofing language was English. This fixed the problem. Of course, I am now wondering how part of the text had a different proofing language set. Anyway, great suggestion - thank you!

Freshly pasted word is treated the same language as your language input (in Language bar).

Let's say your default language is English. You open a Word document. Then you copy a french word from a french website, and paste it in Word. MS Word will treat it as "English" word. To avoid that you need to switch to French (Shift+Alt or Shift+Ctrl or whatever you use) and then paste the word. It will be treated as it was entered manually in that language you have switched to.

Also, you can try to turn on option Automatically switch keyboard to match language of surrounding text in File - Options - Advanced tab.
