I also think Office 2007 would be fine for the uses you listed. Just my opinion.
ıt is alittle bit late now. I have already installed office x64 and i just use MathType add-ons to write mathematical formulas. For excel, sometimes i need to add more data, so i chosed office x64. Now, i will use it for a while and if having a problem, i can uninstall to install x86.

The problem is in fact with the difference between 32 and 64-bit software. This article explains how to code for this difference, so the resulting application can run on either 32 or 64 bit systems:
