Outlook 2007 & IMAP: no longer displays old mail that is on the server

Hi folks -

I'm using Outlook 2007 and an IMAP server through Godaddy (which I am quickly disliking after many years). I run several accounts, two of which are IMAP (the others are POP). This morning, all of a sudden, the previously retrieved messages on ONE of the IMAP accounts no longer appear in Outlook, despite being on the server -- I can see all of them via webmail. There is only one folder - the Inbox. The other IMAP account still functions normally (which is also through Godaddy), and all my saved folders that reside locally all function normally too -- none of that mail is gone as best I can tell.

I can receive new mail without issue, and send mail as well, but cannot access the old mail via Outlook. I don't get any error messages, I haven't changed any settings, and I've run Microsoft's "Outlook 2007 Inbox Repair Tool" - SCANPST on all my PST files. The tool found errors in all the files, and it repaired them, but that has not changed a thing.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,
Dave

Hello ShrimpBurrito -

Perhaps you have a filter set? Look here:

  1. Click on the View tab.
  2. Click on View Settings icon (near the left side of ribbon toolbar); the Advanced View Settnigs: Messages window opens.
  3. Click the Filter button; the Filter window opens.
  4. Click on the More Choices tab.
  5. Be sure to deselect (uncheck) Only items that are:
  6. Click OK, click OK.

Did that work? If not, perhaps GoDaddy has a setting that they changed.

Solved!

GEWB - Thanks for your reply. I don't have any filters set.

I fixed the problem this morning, after I started getting "Failed to update headers" errors when attempting to retrieve even new mail. So now Outlook couldn't retrieve anything from this one IMAP account.

I did some more searching online, and discovered that Outlook sometimes gives this error when you have an outstanding meeting request, and as it turns out, I had one. I replied to the meeting request, but that did not solve the problem, which I expected according to what I had read. I then ran the SCANPST tool on that PST file again, and it found more errors, which I had it fix. But when I opened that PST file, it only had a few dozen messages from last month. Bizarre.

So since the PST file comprised only of the IMAP inbox, I simply deleted the mail account and made a new one. Upon Send/Receive, it retrieved all my messages, and everything is back to normal. Or at least I hope.

Thanks for your help!

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I have a similar problem, am with Godaddy, use Outlook 2007, have IMAP, and am having similar issues like you have had.

Could you please elaborate ,where you got the tool and mention the steps clearly so that I can replicate the same.

I think I missed a few bits on how to get started.

Regards

Ram

Thanks Dave,

Sorted,

For all those who have a similar problem,

The simple solution is to delete the account ( The confidence comes from the fact that it is a IMAP folder) so all my mails are already there on the server.

Close Outlook and restart it.

Create a new account.

Send/Receive

Bingo all mails are back..

Thanks once again

back to unsolved!

Well, it worked well while it lasted. Since my last post where I deleted and recreated the mail account, it has happened again. Yesterday, all my old mail simply disappeared from the Outlook inbox and it stopped receiving new mail -- but only through this one account. Again, all the messages are still on the server, as I can see them in webmail. Then, after awhile, I start receiving new mail, but the old mail still does not appear.

Today, it has happened again -- the messages that were retrieved in the last 24 hours are now gone as well, and once again, Outlook is not retrieving new mail through this account only. I predict this cycle will continue. Any thoughts?

Ram - Is your account still working normally?
