Windows 7: Office 2010 not listed in default programs

Office 2010 not listed in default programs

I have two machines on which Office 2010 is installed, but neither of them lists Word, Excel etc in the default programs. Word, Excel etc are also not listed under the RegisteredApplications registry key.

Machine 1: Windows 7 HomePremium 64bit. Originally had 64bit version of Office2010 installed but later reverted to 32bit version so could sync with 32bit laptop. Default file associations seem to be fine and Office Programs appear in "Open With" list but they do not appear in the Default Programs list.

Machine 2: Windows Vista Home 32bit. Recently installed Office 2010 (was using Open Office 3.3) but Office programs did not appear in the Default Programs list and default file associations was not set (e.g. .doc files opened with Open Office). Ran Fix-it to uninstall and then reinstalled Office 2010 but no change.

Can anyone give me the registry entries for Office 2010 so it appears in the default programs list? Or tell me how to uninstall / reinstall / fix reg entries?

FWIW; I have office 2010 Pro and the only program that shows in the default programs list is outlook 2010.

All file associations appear to be correct too.

Missing file association has obvious impacts, but just out of curiousity; what [negative] impact are you experiencing as a result of not having the office suite listed under default programs?

There is a way to add them, apprently, using this program: Default Programs Editor

as suggested on this thread: Add a program to the list of Default Programs?

Office 2010 not listed in default programs

Tanya

Thanks for your reply. I've had a look at Default Program Editor but, although it says you can add programs to the Default Programs list, it does not appear to do this.

Like you, I am running Office 2010 Professional (Plus) and it appears to operate fine with all file associations correct also. And, like you, Outlook is the only Office program which appears in my Default Programs list.

The advantage of having the programs appearing in the Default Programs list is that, with one simple step, you can make that program (e.g. Word) the default for all extensions with which it is associated. So, for example, if I loaded Open Office and inadvertently set it to be the default program, it would be really quick to change it back. But, if it's not in the list, it is a matter of laboriously finding files with each associated extension, using "Open With" and setting the Office program as the default - which is what I had to do with the Vista machine (my daughter's).

Ah, I understand.

Ok, how about this solution...

Default Programs in Windows 7 - adding program to program list | AkillesBlog

Pretty technical, but it looks like it might suit your needs.

Office 2010 not listed in default programs

Tanya

Thanks for your help with this.

This seems to be quite a widespread issue – which I find odd, given that OpenOffice has no trouble inserting itself into the Default Programs list!

I have now manually added this to my registry and it gives me exactly the results I would have expected with all of the Office Programs now appearing in the list …

Name: DP1.JPG
Views: 201
Size: 43.0 KB

I am also happily able to change the file associations without any problem …

Name: DP2.JPG
Views: 182
Size: 52.6 KB

In case you are interested, I’ve attached the .reg file which I created to do this. (Also pasted below.)

I created this by going through the Class reg entries for each program, and copying the (Default) entry. I put the capability entries under the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office\14\program entries. There was already an entry for Word but I needed to create one each for the other programs.

Kind regards … PastorMike

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

Office 2010 not listed in default programs

Just in case anyone else wants to use this solution …

I found out that the description section under RegisteredApplications should read “Prog.Application.14” so as to match the description under Classes (rather than “Microsoft Prog” as I had it previously).

The way that I had it previously didn’t seem to cause any problems but what made me believe that this change was needed was the fact that I had two entries for Microsoft Outlook under RegisteredApplications. When I deleted the one with the description “Outlook.Application.14,” every time I opened Outlook it would say that Outlook was not my default program for emails (even though it had all of its defaults). When I changed the description of the other entry to “Outlook.Application.14” everything was fine again.

So, although what I had put in previously didn’t cause any problems that I could detect, I believe the correct description is Prog.Application.14 (which corresponds to the CLASS entries).

I’ve attached the .reg file with the change and also pasted the changed lines below.

Kind regards … Michael Willemse (PastorMike)

!!!SOLVED!!! - Much thanks to you, PastorMike. The .reg patch you uploaded was the only way to fix file association for .docx when Windows 7 'Set Associations' or 'Open With save option' both failed to save the request.
