MS Office 2010 - Why do I need it?

Can anybody advise.
I have been quite happy operating with MS Office 2003 and all of a sudden I can't open any of my old files, but keep getting a MS message / advert insisting I purchase MS Office 2010.
I don't remember downloading anything to do with MS Office 2010, but the message to buy has installed itself on my desktop.
It seems a bit impertanent for MS to decide what we all need.
How do I get out of this situation and return to my old package, MS 2003

Go to control panel and click on Uninstall a Program and uninstall Office 2010. his was a trial of Office 2010 that was probably preloaded on your computer from the manufacturer. It's called "bloatware."
