Word 2007 proofing tool behaving oddly

I just opened a new blank document in Word, typed a short article, then clicked the proofing tool. It kept bringing up the "find and replace" box. After I closed the document and reopened it, the proofing tool worked correctly again. Anyone have any idea what would make that happen? I did get several updates last night but I don't know what they were.
