Word 2010 "Not Responding" immediately after opening

I'm not sure what happened, but a month ago my Word started freezing and displaying a "Not Responding" pop-up pretty quickly after I opened it. This is the first time something like this has happened to me in the three years I have owned my laptop.

I don't know what to do, I need to use Word regularly for school assignments.

Thanks for any suggestions! I appreciate it.

Customize Word 2010 "Open"
Is there a way to customize what appears when I click "Open" (or "File" - "Open") in Word 2010? I used to like the My Places Bar in the previous version I used because I need to open only a few folders in one directory--I don't need all the other stuff that appears on "Open." Thanks.

Pinning "New" and "Open" Word document to start menu
Using Word 2007, I am unable to pin the "New" and "Open" Word Document to the Start Menu. I was able to do this in XP and Vista. I go to "All Programs" and can load Word but cannot find the options new/open. In Word I go to "Word Options" and it is not listed there either. Thanks.
