Welcome to the forum.
What happens when you try?
Any error messages.
WORD can read files created in earlier versions by design.
Try this. It reads docs dating back to 2000: Download Word Viewer from Official Microsoft Download Center
You should be able to go into word options and set it to read documents made with older versions.

"Word cannot open the document:User does not have access privileges"
That is what shows up when I try to open it up.
My computer crashed 2 weeks ago and these are files that were restored from a Kaspersky back-up.
Your issue is not that Word cannot open old files the error message clearly states it does not have the required privileges to open the file. You need to adjust the permissions of the files in question, especially if they came from a previous installation.
Thanks to all for your responses. I did find that I can open them in my "F" drive (external HD) where my back up files reside. WOOHOO!!!!!
I am a HAPPY camper (even though a novice computer compared to y'all)
My bidnez files are once again available to me!
Now if I could only get back my previous emails I would be estatic. (That is my next quest)!
