Word 2002 working but showing as not installed!

I have Word 2002 installed on Windows 7 Pro x64, it is not part of an Office installation but part of Works Suite 2005 although it was the only program that I installed from it. It has been fully updated and has had various compatibility packs and plugins installed.

If I open the program from a shortcut it works perfectly opening, editing, saving, documents.

What I cannot do is open .doc files by clicking on them even though Word is shown as the default program.
If I try to get any further I get 'This action is only valid for programs that are currently installed'.
This appears if I click on 'Open' from a files context menu, if I click on 'Open with' it shows only Word and if I click on that I get the same message. I also get the message if I click on 'Help - Detect and Repair' within the main program window.
Programs and Features shows neither Word nor Works. Microsoft Word 2002 is showing in Advanced Uninstaller Pro.

Reinstalling is not at this point an option and in any event, as I have said, everything within the program itself works with the exception of the Detect and Repair option.

My reason for posting is because I am wondering if there is any way to get the OS to recognise the program by editing the registry, at least as far as the .doc file extension goes. I have checked a couple of keys that I know about and although I have nothing to compare it with they seem to be correct. It is possible that some keys might actually be missing but I have no way of knowing.

I really don't know your answer but I think these from Microsoft might help you understand.

    Thanks for the reply.

I had already done a lot of reading before I posted but nothing I read mentioned the specific issue I am having.
Given some of the things I did read the issue I am having is minor compared to the problems other people have had.

If I am right the problem is related to the file association settings in the registry and if I could find someone who has the program actually working with Windows 7 in that respect and compare their settings to mine I might be able to sort it out.
