Excel, Clearing formats doesn't clear the background color

I cannot see why Clearing cell formats would not clear the Colour formats as well. This would be the logical approach & also why would you want the cell colour remaining if you have cleared the cell format.

I suspect that your 2010 manual may have an error & not your work.

Perhaps the reference is to the "Table Style". When clearing formatting on table styles, the style remains and that includes background colors.

Create a table and then click on a cell. From the "Table Styles" ribbon option, you can select a table style. Click the down arrow for a full list of styles.

What you describe doing yourself was to manually modify the properties of the cells; That is; the background color.

When you clear formatting in that case, you clear the manually formatted cell backgrounds.
