Word 2010, how to eliminate lines between paragraphs

Hi all
I am formatting a word doc to have indents on paragraphs (it's for a book so I also have drop text on the first letter of the first paragraph of each chapter). Whenever I add make a paragraph there is a big space (line) between it and the paragraph before. When I do a linebreak (shift+enter) then word doesn't recognize it as a new paragraph.
How can I get the same appearance as doing a linebreak but so they are paragraphs and I can put the indent on them?
Thank you in advance

I am using Word 2013 which is similar to 2010 as far as I know.

Have you tried Selecting Design from the Ribbon & then Paragraph Spacing as there are some options there that may help. This also has a drop down menu & at the bottom is Custom Paragraph Spacing, which seems that you can set your desired indent as well.

You have more than one situation here.

First of all, you state "When I do a linebreak (shift+enter) then word doesn't recognize it as a new paragraph" which is the correct behavior of Word as SHIFT+ENTER is a "soft" break NOT a paragraph break.

For this document you need at least two separate paragraph styles: one for the first paragraph of a chapter (with drop cap) and a second style for general body paragraphs. Set the spacing (indents, line and paragraph) for each style as desired.
