How to set Word 2003 as default handler for XML Files

I have both Office 2003 and 2013 installed on my computer. I want to use Word 2003 to open XML files since 2013 can't. However, when I go to "Default Programs" or "Open With" and select Word 2003, it always changes it to Word 2013 once I press okay. I can open XML files from within Word 2003, but want to be able to open them the way I open the rest of files: From within the folders. How can I do this?

If Word 2003 opens .xml files locate one on your computer, right-click it and choose Open with then you may need to use Choose program and Word/winword [don't accept the first list but manually select what you want]. Be sure there's a checkmark in the Always use this program [or something similar], should always open the correct program when double-clicking a file.

I know how to do that. I said I did that in my first post. But when I do that, it says I selected Word 2013, and won't let me change it. No matter how many times I select Word 2003, it defaults to Word 2013.

I just checked Word 2011 on my Mac OS X and it can open .xml files and Save As either Word XML Document or as Word 2003 XML Document. The same choices are available in my Word 2010 and Word 2013.

I tried to keep Office 2003 on my Win7 computer but it was not allowed when installing the 64-bit version of Office 2010. And since both WinXP and Office 2003 have had support dropped by Microsoft I changed my WinXP computer over to Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon using LibreOffice.
