Wow thanks for all the feedback guys!
Yeah i had a look around last night and stumbleupon Open Office.
As i understand it, Open Office is close to the same thing as MS Word. And i can open and save Word files with it.
But il take a look at the other suggestions aswell, and see what i think is best for my use.

"My copy of Office 2010 is on two desktops as we speak, my main rig and my backup rig. It's also been on two other old PCs prior to these two as well, only one of those four in total was a laptop."

Yes, I have a copy of Office Pro 2007 like that. Been installed on a dozen systems. It's called a Volume License.

My copy of Office 2010 is not a Volume License.

That's not normal behavior, at least not in the US. Possibly the laws are different in Europe regarding software licenses. Just out of curiosity what is the Volume Label on that disc?

Not exactly the Volume Label number I was looking for, but the disc label answers the question nicely. Did you notice the part on the label that says "All use subject to volume license agreement"? It is a Volume Licensed version and that explains why you can install it multiple times and on different systems.

Well the place I bought it from obviously got the product description completely wrong then stating it was for use on two computers. In which case it makes it even more of a bargain at £30.

Thanks, that reminds me. I should get our second-youngest grandchild to pick up a student version of Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus for me before he graduates from the University of Michigan next spring. At $47.17 USD for a physical DVD with a license code in the package, two different installs allowed and all just OTC (as opposed to a key card, a download, a lengthy activation process and many other hoops to jump through, like Adobe Acrobat Pro student version), it's a real bargain.

Yes! Congratulations, you really lucked out on that one! At the current exchange rate, £30 compared to $47.17, The University of Michigan's price is within a dollar or two of what you paid. Got to put that on my To Do list!
