Same office product DOESN't need activation

Hi all
Confusion here

I've downloaded VISIO and PROJECT from technet as well as OFFICE 2007 (Enterprise VL - doesn't need activating).

Now I get two choices -- If I enter a RETAIL key both VISIO 2007 and PROJECT 2007 ask for activation.

However since I'm installing these on a 2003 server VM I also get an option - Enter THIS KEY if you are installing via Terminal Services (whatever that is).

Anyway installing LOCALLY on the vm I entered the Terminal Services key -- guess what no activation needed.

So it seems the Activation mechanism is contained or based upon some algorithm within the serial number / product key since I'm using the SAME ISO downloaded from technet.

I'm now confused --maybe someone can explain what "Terminal Services" are or why I'm not getting a request for activation when installing on the LOCAL machine.

(RDP with different user ID also doesn't require product to be activated - I think W2003 server standard edition has a number of default client users before it needs extra licenses).

VM is Windows server 2003 R2 version -- works crackingly fast as a desktop VM under Windows 7 X-64 BTW.

Incidentally with this whole office stuff, CS4, and a few other apps the ENTIRE C drive only uses 7GB - less than another of my XP VM's. Perhaps W2003 server was overlooked as a desktop OS - it's quite easy to customise it for a desktop - running a server OS on a workstation you need to switch off some of the "nag" features".

Confused but happy.

Note - apart from AERO which is to me really eye candy just enabling the normal themes service in W2003 server you can still get a decent desktop looking like a workstation rather than the bland blue plain windows 2003 server desktop.

enc nice Jaguar theme -- filched from Windows 7 Brazilian wallpapers - download from the Windows 7 get more online themes from MS and extracted the wallpaer for W2003.

Cheers
jimbo
