    Office 2016 Won't Run

I have Office 2003 and tried downloading and running 2016. It did the download as expected and put icons down in the task bar. When I clicked on the Excel tab, it said it would activate it if I put in my email address and phone number. The alternative was to enter the Product Key. Everything acted, again, as if all was well and then it said it had stopped running and I should shut it down. Repeated tries gave me the same results. Trying any other component (Word, Powerpoint, etc.) also caused an immediate crash. FWIW, my first attempts to use it were to bring up previous files made in the 2003 version. This install was done through a web site and was part of a group offer. Any thoughts? Was I supposed to uninstall the 2003 version first? There weren't any instructions.
    I uninstalled it for now.
Office 2016 is confusing in that when you try to get information on it, you get all kinds of Office 365 thrown at you too. They are separate and you don't need one to run the other, do you? With it all lumped together, it's hard to distinguish what's what.

"This install was done through a web site and was part of a group offer."

It looks like that's where your problem is. Normally you would purchase Office 2016 in a retail shop or through Microsoft as a direct download. In either case you would be supplied with a Product Code to enter for activation.

Buying software on line from unknown sources can be very risky as there are a lot of sharks out there.

Perhaps you can supply more information on where you got office 2016 from.

My son is a county employee and all employees were given the opportunity to download Office 2016 at a reduced price. He was told when he bought it that he could download it to multiple computers. I have his order number as well as the product key. It was worth a shot and it seemed to download OK. The first part I tried to use was Excel. When I clicked on the icon, it said it was going to activate it. I needed to put in email address and phone number OR the product key. Regardless of which I used, I don't know if it was checking the I.P. address or what, but it started to bring up the spreadsheet I was going to test it on, I could see it in the background, but in short time it said the program had stopped running and I needed to shut it down. It told me it was looking for a solution to the problem, but it never came back with anything.

Thanks for getting back & explaining the situation. It would seem that the county had a multi-user licence from Microsoft, which would be quite usual. The county has then allowed employees to download Office 2016 under their license agreement with MS.

It's possible that the number of users under that license has been exceeded & therefore you are being blocked.

Your son should contact the county & see what is happening & it's really up to the county to look into the matter as they are the license holder.
