Outlook 2010 and IMAP - DELETE Does DELETE

Hi there
Be careful with IMAP and Outlook 2010 as the DELETE really does DELETE stuff off the server.

In Outlook 2007 you got a line through the items and had to do EDIT==>PURGE to delete stuff off the server so be careful if you really DON'T want to physically delete mail from the server when using OUTLOOK 2010 - especially if you still need the email and are just testing OUTLOOK 2010 on one machine and need the email on other machine(s).

There might be settings to change this but I've basically used the defaults -- there is quite a bit of change from Outlook 2007 to 2010 (it's actually much nicer - more in keeping with the rest of Office 2010).

Cheers
jimbo

Hi there
I retrieved the email FIRST on a "Proper" machine - when testing always assume the worst will happen and then you'll never be disappointed.

Thanks

WRONG

you got a "Trash" folder now where the items are being moved to.

when you go into an imap mailbox the first three folders you see are "Inbox", "Sent Items" and "Trash"

only when you delete the emails from the mailbox's trash folder they are eventually gone. to do so highlight all mail in your trash folder, press the "shift" key and then click the "delete" button on the ribbon.

Hi there

Not on my system - there isn't a Trash folder in my version Outlook 2010 Beta (Downloaded from MS Technet - so not a Torrent copy).

There's a DELETED Items - but the items don't go in their either.

OK, go to your account settings and choose More Settings... (first image).

on the second image you can see that the account is in "classic" IMAP mode (deleted emails are marked and will be purged when you use the purge button from the "Folder" ribbon)

3rd image:
  1. activate Move deleted items to the following folder on the Server.
  2. either create a new folder name it Trash or Rubbish or Deleted Items and click on it so that it is highlighted or just click on an existing folder.
  3. then you click OK --> Next --> Finish
4th image
when you go back to the Deleted Items settings you'll notice that your trash folder now has got a recycle bin icon

that's where deleted emails from this account will be moved to. if you have set up multiple accounts proceed accordingly for each one.

Pay attention that Purge items when switching folders while online is unticked. otherwise all deleted items will be purged switching to another folder from your trash folder (your other thread)!!!!!!

I got accounts with 3 different providers (incl. gmail) and the recycle bin works with all of them

to empty your trash folder right click it and choose Empty Folder

hope this helps

cheers
