Are There 64 bit Versions Of Office Available ?

    Hi,

Would anybody please be able to tell me if Office is available in 64 bit format or is it only available in 32 bit format ? If it is available in 64 bit format what version of Office does that start at, ie, 2003, 2007, 2010 ?

Also, are there any versions of Office that are better with Windows 7 64 bit re less bugs or less likely to have issues ? There seem to be a few issues with Office versions and Office applications with Windows 7 in this sub forum.

    Thx

I'm pretty sure that 64 bit Office starts with Office 2010. You can download the beta from here:

Office 2010 is the first version that includes a 64-bit version. 64-bit simply wasnt around for the older versions.

Also, you don't need to run 64bit office, just because you are running 64bit windows. 32bit office will run just fine, the only thing 64bit allows for is much larger datasets.

It is the large data set stuff I am working with, I have access databases with millions of records in the tables.

Please take no offense to the following comment. But, its crap like that, that makes me scream at people for not using a SQL (or other real database) backend. You can have access run the frontend and it will query the db.

I use SQL Server 2005 in conjunction with access, however, some of the access databases are distributed to non networked PC's as standalone applications.

You need to be in full posession of the facts before making crap statements

Of course, a "real" database system like MS SQL is going to come with a license which must be purchased and might make this easy decision for one person a difficult decision for another person.

    Hi there

drifting away from the original thread -- however for a decent FAST FREE database system consider MySQL -- must be ZILLIONS of users worldwide.

Plenty of decent GUI tools as well to manage it - works on Linux as well as Windows and is perfect for these type of DB's where fast access is required.

MS Access is really designed for a SMALL often SINGLE USER user DB - not really for a largish multi user access application where you might need complex queries as well.

I sometimes use ACCESS for "prototyping" small DB's or queries before creating REAL table spaces and reports in MySQL.

    Added --

OK I've just read the remark about Stand alone application on Non Networked PC's - however I'd still suggest it would be better to invest some time in managing these from a Network if you can do it rather than all the attendant problems of having to fix individual DB problems on non networked PC's.

You'll have a one off cost of development - but then it should be MUCH cheaper in future maintenance and development costs.

I'm not sure of the budget in your case but I'm sure over the longer term running your apps from a networked DB (which you already have) would be far cheaper and less time consuming.

Of course the "Politics" of each organisation is different however.

    Cheers
