    Office Perpetual Install

My old XP machine is dying, so I bought a new small notebook with Win 7 Pro. I had them install my Office 2000 suite on it. Well, Outlook 2000 won't work right. The WAB*.dll files won't register.

I found my Office XP Pro upgrade disk, which had worked fine on my old machine. I bought a cd/dvd drive so I could install the upgrade. (I have to unplug my mouse and keyboard to plug in the drive). The install on the new machine seemed fine.

I put away the cd/dvd drive and tried to launch my upgraded office apps. It basically told me I had to put back the disk to run the app. grrr. I did that and tried again.

Well, when I launch the apps from the start menu, it just re-installs the suite. Over and over.

So, I find the exe's on the hard drive and launch from there. The apps launch, but they tell me "<whatever> has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application."

What's going on? What can I do to get Office back? Now I have nothing. Before I attempted the upgrade I had Office 2000 working. I could even receive e-mail with Outlook. (I couldn't send e-mail - it would just complain about WAB32.dll)

    Thanks,
    Jon

I think the problem is Outlook - the rest may work. Have a look here: Outlook on Vista (and Win7)

No, All Office apps are in this sorry state.

    >trying to unistall the office..and install back
That's extremely scary. If I uninstall, there will be nothing for the upgrade disk to upgrade.

Well, I tried to uninstall, and the system won't let me. I don't have permission. What's really awful is that when I launch ANY software (not related to office) the installer launches and goes into an infinite loop of closing and reoping at a very rapid rate, making ALL programs unusable. My new computer has become an expensive paperweight.

try to safe mode and uninstall from there.

The installer and uninstaller were broken totally and the computer became unusable. When I launched ANY app, the installer would launch and crash about 20 times per second. So, finally I did a complete system restore. Very difficult because the installer kept grabbing the focus before I could make selections on the restore screens. Finally done and problems gone. I installed Office XP Pro BEFORE I upgraded to Win 7 Pro and everything installed fine. Though I have paid for the 7 Pro upgade, I may not use it this time.
