Office 97 Uninstall Help on Windows 7

I started several years ago with Office 97 Professional , and had upgrades for Office Professional 2000 and 2003. I recently had some computer problems, and had to re-install a copy of Office 97 Professional, in hope of using the upgrades to get back to Office 2003 Professional. I got Office 97 Professional to install, but could not get the upgrades to 2000 and 2003 to install. Then I tried to uninstall Office 97, and it will not uninstall. I have attempted the uninstall several times. It keeps telling me to insert CD1 into the CD/DVD Drive, but when I do, it tries to re-install Office 97. I cannot get rid of it.

I bought Office 2007 and loaded it on the machine yesterday. I love it, but I still have Office 97 eating up storage space.

Can someone tell me how to removed Office 97 without going through the Control Panel's Add/Remove Software?

    Thanks,

    Lee

Try using the Office Removal wizard. See this support page, it contains the download link for the wizard too.

    Hi LeeM, FYI

You do not need to install the older the versions of Office prior to installing the latest version as long as you have the older disks handy.

So…. since you have Office 2007 you can just install that version; during the install process 2007 will ask about the previous version, just install the previous version's disk in the drive (remove the current disk) and the 2007 installer will verify/validate the previous version and if good, will allow you to continue to install 2007. Read/follow the instructions for the validation process.

And since you have Office 97 - 2003, any one of the disks will do for the validation process. So there’s no need to install all those versions prior to installing your latest version.

BTW, this goes for most programs that have "upgrade" options; Photoshop is another example.

As for removing the older programs office programs, the latest version will just over write the programs installed while leaving the ones not upgraded intact. So, say you have Office 2000 which includes FrontPage, and then you install Office 2007 which doesn’t have FrontPage, all the Office programs will get updated to 2007 except FrontPage.

So you will still have FrontPage available from Office 2000, while, for example Word 2000, will be updated to Word 2007.

So… how would you remove FrontPage 2000 If you no longer need it? Unfortunately I can’t remember at the moment, but i'm sure it can be done.

Hope this long drawn out post helps for future installs. Good luck.

Office 97 Uninstall Help on Windows 7

    Thank you Bill2 and Sygnus21.

If I use the Office (OFF97) Removal Tool, will it delete my Office 2007 or just Office 97?

    Thanks again,

I'm not sure that program is going to work without causing problems, mainly removing 2007 as well.

What programs are you wanting to remove? If you upgraded to 2007 all the older office files have been upgraded, and thus require no "removal" since they are the new updated files.

Perhaps I'm not understanding what it is you're wanting removed???

    Simple Solution

The solution to your problem is simple:

Uninstall 2007, Reinstall 2007 while the setup runs it will give you 2 options
    1. Upgrade
    2. Custom

Select Upgrade it may advise that all the previous versions will be removed or over written select yes and there you go. Previous office installation is gone.

That is a simple shortcut, just go into your start menu, under startup and delete the Office shortcut. It will stop loading.
