    Problem with "MPEG" codec. RDR HX-710 hdd transfer

    Hello,

    I have device Sony RDR HX-710. It's the DVD recorder. Last night I've erased all my videos on it (hdd of 160gb) accidentally. I've read on other forums that it's not possible to connect hdd on computer because of different HDD format (not NTFS,FAT16 etc.) and because of that partitions are not being recognized. So I've tried connecting throught usb device (scythe's kama connect2 - great stuff for hdds,it has PATA :-D) and used recovery software. The best result was shown by Active@ File Recovery. Every else program did not produce nothing. It shows MPEG format files with huge size (similar size of videos that i've had recorded). So I've tried with k-lite codec pack with ffdshow (libavcodec) and WMP ant it showed me that this is not recognized format. This is what i've get:

    Code:
    Media Player Classic could not render some of the pins in the graph, you may not have the needed codecs or filters installed on the system.
    The following pins failed to find connectable filter:
    V:\rec\File0000002.mpeg::Output

    What should i do. I've tried converting in .vob files but didn't change anything (i've read that this device produce directly vob files, but it's strange how when ripped it shows smaller size, so i presume that this is another format but not playable on computer. I've tried even conntacting Sony but they said that they don't know how to resolve problem. Great assistance. Think that i need one Sony Engineer.

    Cheers,

    Alen

    Hi Alen, I have also formatted my hard disk on my Sony RDR HX-710 where I had my sons first 4 years of life recorded, its depressing, your post here is the only one that offers any hope. After formatting I have not recorded anything. Have you had any progress since your last post above? I think you are on the right track..
    best regards,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
    I'm sorry to infrom you that I didn't accomplish anything. I've tried to restore but hadn't time to look up for other solutions. After some lost nights banging my head on the wall, I have started from begining, converting VHS except some videos that were gone forever. I've tried to convert to other formats but that didn't work. Now, I'm dubbing to DVD video in HQ (but haven't noticed any difference in standard quality). And it takes weeks to convert all VHS to digital quality. It would be awsome if I could keep direct quality when converting. Now trying to contact one of Sony Engineers through my sisters friend. If i find someone, and achieve something, i'll post here. Till then, best regards and best luck with videos.

    P.S. Have you tried contacting one of companies that recover lost data? Or they use same tools like we do. Maybe they better understand the problem regarding formats etc. But if sony doesn't know, nobody knows. Cheers

    Thanks Alen for your reply..my problem is that I don't have the original on tape. I thought you were on the right track with kama connect2, as you managed to recover the files but it seemed you were missing a part...I will contact a data recovery company this week..I will let you know how that goes..
    thanks again..Ill keep you posted on how the recovery goes or does not go
    all the best
    Tom
