Open System sound and configure it:

Click Start button> in the Search box, type System sound, and click Change the System sound link.

Assuming you're using Windows Media Player, you could go to Options and under "Playback" select the option of "Stop playback when switching to a different user." I tried to look in power but couldn't find a specific setting to stop sound in general however.

Edit: If you mean the log off sound, then yes, do exactly as quochunguit above said.

thanks but neither works. to clarify it's not the log off sound it's actual music played by the computer when it goes to sleep after 15 minutes. it's not my music it's some awful generic muzac.

i too couldn't find anything i power management that relates to music.

Try control panel / sound /highlite speakers, sounds tab, i think you can change the sound there:)

nope, i can't see anything there that helps.

if i could find the music on the hard drive i'd delete it but that might cause problems.

does any else's computer play music through the power management settings?

The only thing that plays on its own are Windows sounds logon, log off, mail, etc, if its that kind of sound then you may not be able to turn it off.

erm, i've fixed it. it was the screensaver except i never got to see it as, when i the monitor woke up, the screensaver would disappear so i never even saw it.

no wonder no one knew what the problem was. thanks for your replies though.

Yep, we need to be aware that some 3rd party screensavers also have an audible element to them as well as a visual one. Just a word of caution. Screensavers are notorious for carrying malware. Make sure that you scan any downloads with an upto date AV scanner prior to running/installing them.
