Music on Makes Windows Explorer Freeze

For someone who likes to work with music files (mp3 & wav files), here's something that's very annoying. If I want to use Windows Explorer to organize, copy & paste, or delete a file on either my computer's hard drive or my external hard drive, Explorer just freezes (and slightly slows down the rest of the computer), until I shut it down via Task Manager. And even then, it gets hung up in the background, so that I have to force a restart or shutdown when I'm finished.

However, if I'm using a flash drive, I can copy, paste and delete all day long with no hang-ups (go figure).

All of my music files on the hard drives came from my old XP computer, if that's of any relevance.

Suggestions or comments from the gallery?

    Hi, and welcome to SevenForums.

I am not sure what could be causing this. I recall having similar problems with .ogg files and other music files with corrupted tags and/or special characters in them, long filenames or just too many files within a single folder (but not on Win7, just XP).

I wouldn't want you to run around checking things because I am not sure how I can help, all I can ask is if you're running something like WMP while moving these files, or have the folders included in indexing, that might be causing it. Flash drives (to my knowledge) usually aren't included into indexing.

    Anyone else have an idea?

I did learn a little yesterday about "taking ownership of files," which helped me delete a few extra files from earlier testing. I just need more time to implement ownership across my various subfolders.

    Stay tuned.
