Digital Photography Programs -- Which one is which?

Hello all,

I have started taking digital photos, and wanted a good way of cataloging them in Windows 7 (placing them in the correct directory, etc.). I tried Windows Live Photo Gallery once for transferring the photos and putting them into directories, and that seemed fine until someone suggested that Adobe Bridge would be better. Then, another person suggested Adobe Photoshop Lightroom would be better than Bridge because in addition to managing the photo library, it would also do most of the editing I needed, without compromising the image file.

So, I started learning Lightroom 3 on (a great CBT company). I really like the interface of Lightroom, from what I have used, but I'm not sure if it is the 'right' program because someone else suggested that I use ACDSee.

The main thing that I liked about my first and so far only transfer of pictures was that Windows Live Photo Gallery recognized the pictures that were taken around the same time and offered me the option of 'tagging' them -- placing them in the same folder in Windows -- together. I would first like to make sure that any photo library management software *at least* does this, and much more.

Any comparisons, or links to comparisons of these programs: Windows Live Photo Gallery, Adobe Bridge, Adobe Lightroom, and ACDSee, would be greatly appreciated.
Helpful input is also welcome.

You're correct in saying Adobe Bridge is good and usefull.
Although it seems to clutter my things up even more.. Maybe that's just me though.
I mean, as a lot of Adobe products are, it's a fairly cluttered program.

Also, if you're not into using Bridge, you could try using Lightroom, that's like Bridge but more to the editing side of things.

Win 7 Pro x64, VM Win XP, Win7 Pro Sandbox, Kubuntu 11

Their are many good applications out there in the wild of the internet, and finding the right one can be just a little tough at times.

The ones you have mentioned are very good, but they have a tendency to be a bit costly. If you would like an excellent freeware application then "Faststone" is probably the best out there (IMO). It will do everything you want in a photo management tool plus it gives you some very nice (not quite photoshop quality) editing tools.
